Keeping a Healthy Smile After Age 45

With age comes wisdom, and sometimes some not-so-pleasant realities. Muscle aches, arthritis, and fatigue happen more and more frequently. Dental problems are also a rising factor in the aging process, meaning that oral infections and further complications are more likely for patients over the age of forty five. Root canals and tooth extractions may be necessary either from poor oral hygiene or accident. In order to keep a healthy smile, it is important to have good oral hygiene and visit your dentist regularly.

Due to a person’s natural aging process, dental care is more important than ever over the age of forty five. Infections are more likely to occur, creating tooth abscessing and extreme pain. Dentists can perform root canals to try to save a tooth; however, if the infection is too advanced, the tooth may need to be extracted. Patients will then decide, with their dentist’s help, what further treatment will be taken. Whether patients use partial bridges, dentures or dental implants, they can enjoy a beautiful smile for years to come.

It is important that everyone, at any age, maintain good oral hygiene and visit the dentist twice each year to help prevent these advanced procedures. Here are some tips for good dental care.

  • It is important that you brush your teeth thoroughly every day, to prevent cavities and bad breath.
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day and take your time.
  • Use the proper equipment when brushing. A soft-bristled brush and toothpaste that contains fluoride are recommended. Consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush if you have difficulty brushing effectively either due to arthritis or other reasons.
  • Replace your toothbrush once every three to four months.
  • Floss at least once a day.
  • When flossing, slowly pull the dental floss between each tooth, from gum-line to the top of the tooth and across all sides of the tooth, scraping off any plaque.
  • Reduce plaque between teeth by using an antimicrobial mouth rinse.
  • The smallest morsel of food that is stuck in a molar or between your teeth can develop bacteria that can lead to cavities. Always brush your teeth before going to sleep.
If you are experiencing dry mouth, bad breath, tooth or gum pains, consult with your dentist immediately. Otherwise, visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and exams. With proper oral hygiene and regular care, you can enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile for years to come.
