Canker Sores

Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are small shallow ulcers in the mouth. These common sores can make eating and talking uncomfortable and sometimes be extremely painful. While the cause of canker sores is unknown, doctors believe that they could be brought on by stress, tissue injury from sharp teeth or dental appliances, certain foods or allergies. In addition, underlying health conditions could also cause canker sores to appear.

Canker sores are usually found in the moveable parts of the mouth including the tongue, inner cheeks or gums. The ulcers begin as a small oval or round reddish swelling that bursts open. Canker sore symptoms include painful or sore spots inside the mouth, prior to appearing a tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, pain while swallowing or eating. Severe canker sore symptoms include fever, physical sluggishness and swollen lymph nodes.

The pain from canker sores generally lessens within a few days and the canker sores themselves heal within two weeks without medical treatment. While there is no official canker sore treatment, we may prescribe medication to help with the pain and remove some of the bacteria from the area. Our canker sore treatments may include an antimicrobial mouth rinse, a corticosteroid ointment or a prescription to reduce pain and irritation.

While canker sores are a common condition that affects over 20% of Americans every day, it is important to monitor how frequently you are experiencing them and notify us at Howell Dental Associates if the condition becomes chronic. While canker sores can’t be prevented, you can lower the risk of getting them by avoiding foods that might irritate the mouth, avoiding irritations from chewing gum, and remembering to brush your teeth and floss after every meal. If you are experiencing unusual canker sore symptoms such as extremely large canker sores, sores that are spreading, canker sores that last more than three weeks, intolerable pain or high fever, consult your doctor or your local Howell, NJ dentist immediately.
