Dental Disease & Tooth Decay Prevention
If you think you may have any of these dental diseases, find out how Howell Dental Associates can help you.
- Tooth Decay – One of the most common dental diseases, tooth decay or dental caries results from the loss of minerals from the tooth’s enamel and the penetration of bacteria into the tooth’s structure. Tooth decay most often develops on the chewing surface of back teeth, in between teeth, and near the gumline.
- Gum Disease – An inflammation of the gums, if left untreated gum disease can progress to Gingivitis and then to Periodontitis which will affect and gradually destroy the tissue surrounding the teeth. Without proper treatment, the teeth will eventually become loose, fall out or have to be removed.
- Dry Mouth/Xerostomia– Dry Mouth is the result of a reduced flow of saliva which leaves the mouth very dry. While most people have felt temporary Xerostomia, especially when nervous or anxious, if the sensation continues most or all the time, you can experience difficulty in speaking and eating and it can lead to more serious problems in the future such as rampant tooth decay. Chronic Xerostomia usually has an underlying systemic cause.
- Bad Breath/Halitosis – The unpleasant odor of bad breath or Halitosis is an embarrassing social problem. Halitosis can result from poor diet or dental hygiene, dental problems, Xerostomia, systemic diseases, smoking, or ketosis as a result of fasting.
- Canker Sores/Aphthous Stomatis – Aphthous Stomatis is a mouth ulcer caused by a break in the mucous membrane of the mouth. This shallow and painful open sore usually appears on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips, soft palate, base of the gums and on or under the tongue.
- Trench Mouth/ANUG – Trench Mouth is a bacterial infection of the gums that causes deep ulcerations of the gingival tissues and is extremely painful. Triggered by poor oral hygiene and poor diet, it can lead to necrosis of the gum tissues and spread to other areas of the body if not treated.
- Burning Mouth Syndrome – Both painful and frustrating, Burning Mouth Syndrome can be described as a burning or scalding sensation of the tongue, lips, palate or entire mouth. Often happening as a result of other oral problems such as Oral Thrush or Dry Mouth, some people also experience it when there is an actual physical change of the tongue known as Glossitis.
- Oral Thrush – A yeast infection of the mouth, Oral Thrush is usually limited to mucous membranes of the mouth and tongue. It is caused by the yeast-like fungal organism, Candida albicans. Although Candida albicans is normally found in many peoples’ mouths, Oral Thrush occurs when it starts growing out of control. Not dangerous, Oral Thrush can be cured in 7 to 14 days with proper medical treatment.
- Oral Leukoplakia – This disease produces thickened white patches that form on the gums, floor of the mouth, inner lining of the checks and under the tongue that can’t be easily scraped off. While not painful and mostly benign or non cancerous, there is a small percentage that shows early signs of cancer.
- Dental Abscesses – A dental abscess is a painful infection resulting from a collection of pus at the root of a tooth or at the area between the tooth and gum. While it may develop as a result of tooth decay or infection in the gum, a dental abscess can cause serious health problems if left untreated.
- Dry Socket/Alveolar Osteitis – A common complication after a tooth extraction, Dry Socket is the result of the natural post-surgery healing process being delayed initiating severe pain that begins about 2 days after the extraction, worsening over time.
- Teeth Grinding/Bruxism – The unconscious grinding or clenching of teeth while awake or asleep, Bruxism can result in tooth or jaw damage. While often an occasional problem that yields few consequences for most people, for others Bruxism can cause permanent damage to the teeth.
- Temporomandibular Joint Disorder/TMJ – TMJ Disorder is a syndrome that affects the jaw, the jaw joint and the surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and movement of the jaw, resulting in acute or chronic pain. One of the most complex and frequently used joints in the human body, the TMJ connects the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull. Problems result from the dislocation or damage of the cartilage disk that acts as a cushion to absorb the stress of the joint. Movement when the mouth opens and closes then results in pain.
- Dental Erosion – Dental erosion is the irreversible loss of tooth enamel due to chemical processes. The tooth enamel, a mineralized hard tissue that covers and protects the tooth, is the hardest tissue of the human body. Acids that can cause dental erosion include the stomach acid in vomit, acidic beverages, citrus fruits and more.
