Do You Need A Denture Dentist?

Dentists who make dentures are not all the same. It’s important to choose the right dentist for your dentures, whether you need full dentures for the first time, a replacement of existing dentures, precision partial dentures, implant retained dentures, or immediate dentures. Technological advances in dentures allow dentists who make dentures to create precision partial dentures and full dentures that are so secure and natural-looking that only you and your trusted denture dentist will know that they’re not your own teeth.

Full Dentures, Duplicates, and Precision Partial Dentures

A denture is a removable appliance used to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are 2 types of dentures: complete and partial.
  • Complete dentures are made when all the teeth are missing. They can either be immediate or conventional. An immediate complete denture is made in advance, prior to extracting the patient’s remaining teeth and can be inserted as soon as the teeth are removed. Typically, a patient walks into the office with his or her own teeth, and walks out with dentures.  The teeth are extracted, and a prefabricated denture is inserted directly over the extracted teeth sockets.  With immediate dentures, the patient doesn’t have to be without teeth during the healing period; however, due to residual bone loss and gum shrinkage during healing, immediate dentures are only temporary. The patient will eventually need a new set of conventional dentures.
  • Partial dentures are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum colored base on a metal framework that holds the denture in place by clasping onto remaining natural teeth. Precision partial dentures are partial dentures with special attachments built in, which snap onto existing attachments in the mouth to avoid the need for visible clasps. Implant retained dentures feature a titanium screw that is placed into a hole drilled into the bone to approximate the position of teeth.  After several months, the titanium screw will have attached itself onto the bone. Once the screw is firmly adhered to the bone, the implant is then uncovered and a post is attached to the implant.  This post may support a porcelain tooth, or it may support an attachment for a denture.
