Dry Mouth Reasons

We all need saliva to moisten and cleanse the mouth and digest food, processes  which are prohibited by a condition called Xerostomia (also known as dry mouth).

Reasons for dry mouth include:

  • Side effect from medication
  • Side effect from certain diseases and infections
  • Nerve damage to head or neck area
  • Dehydration
  • Lifestyle choices such as smoking or breathing with your mouth open

Symptoms of Xerostomia include sticky dry feeling, frequent thirst, mouth sores, dry raw tongue, hoarseness and bad breath. Dry mouth increases the risk of gingivitis and other diseases, since dry mouth results in a lack of the saliva which normally prevents infection by controlling bacteria. The bacteria then spread and the condition eventually leads to periodontitis and even more severe gum diseases.

Treatments for dry mouth start with consulting your doctor regarding medication. If your medication is not a cause of your dry mouth, schedule a visit with your local New Jersey dentist for a solution and treatment program. While at home, some simple remedies that can help relieve the symptoms include sucking on sugar free candy, chewing sugar free gum, drinking plenty of water, breathing through your nose, using a room vaporizer, and protecting your teeth with fluoride toothpaste.
