Getting Dental Crowns

Nobody wants to get a dental crown, but sometimes it is unavoidable and it’s the only way to save a tooth compromised by a cavity or other degree of decay. Fortunately for patients, while dental crown procedures require multiple visits to the dentist, getting dental crowns is a very common and ultimately successful way to address and repair serious damage to a tooth.

Those who come in to Howell Dental Associates for dental crowns can expect to receive x-rays during the initial consultation as Dr. Goldberg determines the extent of the damage. Once the dentist decides how to proceed, he will provide anesthesia that will numb the tooth and the surrounding gum tissue, after which the affected tooth will be filed down in order to accommodate the crown. Once the tooth has been reshaped, the dentist will make an impression of it—with paste or putty while ensuring the resulting crown won’t impact the patient’s bite—and send the impression to a laboratory so that the dental crown can be made.

It will take between two and three weeks for the dental crown to arrive at the dentist’s office, at which point the patient—who was fitted for a temporary crown during the first visit—will return to have the permanent crown applied. The dentist might once again administer anesthesia to numb the tooth and surrounding area so that the crown be cemented into place. Sometimes teeth are sensitive after the implementation of dental crowns, but more often than not a patient can resume regular eating and drinking habits—as well as regular brushing and flossing—almost immediately after the dental crowns are placed in the mouth.

Dr. Goldberg and his dedicated, professional staff have decades of experience in performing dental crown procedures. We are eager to meet with new and old patients alike. Call us today at (732) 363-5115 to schedule an appointment with NJ’s own dental crown specialist!
