Getting Dental Veneers

How would you like to have a perfect, brilliantly white smile, no matter how stained, chipped or unattractive your teeth may look right now? You can have the smile you’ve always dreamed of in just a few visits to your dentist by getting dental veneers.

Veneers are customized shells made of porcelain that fit over your teeth to improve their appearance. The team at Howell Dental Associates has been improving smiles for years with this popular cosmetic dentistry procedure, but veneers can be part of an overall dental makeover that includes treatment for gum disease.

The first step of the process is a preliminary office visit for diagnosis and treatment planning. Dr. Goldberg will examine your teeth to make sure veneers are appropriate for you, discuss the options and possibly take x-rays of your mouth. He will determine whether porcelain veneers veneers best suit your needs. (Porcelain veneers are more stain resistant and natural looking than composite restorations).

To prepare a tooth for veneer, Dr. Goldberg will trim about half a millimeter of the tooth enamel. A local anesthetic may be used to numb the area. Next, he will take an impression, or mold, of your teeth to send to the dental lab that constructs the veneers. About one to two weeks later, they will be sent back to Dr. Goldberg and he will schedule your appointment for placement. He will first check the fit and color of the veneers, repeatedly removing and trimming it as needed to assure the proper fit. Then he’ll clean, polish and etch your tooth (or teeth) to roughen for the bonding process. The veneer will be attached to your tooth with special cement, and ultraviolet light is used to harden it quickly. Finally, excess cement is removed, your bite is evaluated and final adjustments are made as needed.  The end result: a new and improved smile you’ll be happy to show off.  You will then schedule a follow-up visit a few weeks after the procedure to be sure that the veneers are properly placed. Proceed with good oral hygiene, and you can expect veneers to last for 10 years or more before they need replacement.
