Getting Teeth Bonded

Good news! If you have chipped teeth, unsightly stains, recession lesions or tooth abnormalities, you no longer have to hide your smile. With a relatively simple procedure called dental bonding, a tooth-colored composite resin (plastic) fuses to the surface of your tooth with the aid of light. This bonds the two together to restore the shape, color and quality of your teeth. Quick and cost-effective, cosmetic dental bonding will restore or improve your smile in a single visit.

If you’re looking to close small gaps between your front teeth, or repair tooth decay, gum recession, discoloration, chipped or cracked teeth, Dr. Goldberg will evaluate you to determine if you are the right candidate for the procedure.  In most cases, little advance preparation is needed once you decide to move forward with dental bonding. Anesthesia usually isn’t necessary unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth.

To start the process, Dr. Goldberg will use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that will closely match the color of your tooth. Next, the tooth surface will be roughened, and a mild conditioning liquid will be applied to help the cosmetic dental bonding material adhere to your tooth. The tooth-colored, putty-like resin is then applied, molded and smoothed into the desired shape. An ultraviolet light or laser is then used to harden the material in just minutes. Once hardened, Dr. Goldberg will further sculpt, shape and polish the material ensuring it matches the rest of the tooth surface. Depending on the particular case, bonding takes about 30 minutes per tooth to complete. For multiple teeth, you may need to schedule several visits.

During the days after the dentist bonding procedure, call the office if you notice sharp edges on the bonded teeth or if it feels awkward when you bite down. Once successfully completed, the lifespan of the bonding material depends on your oral habits and how much bonding was done. Typically, it will last from three to 10 years before needing to be touched up or replaced. Limit substances like tea, coffee and cigarette smoke, as they can stain the resin. You’ll especially want to avoid them for the first 48 hours after the procedure.  Also, keep in mind that the bonding resin isn’t nearly as strong as your natural tooth. So if you bite your fingernails or chew on pens, you can risk chipping the material.  Remember to brush your teeth often and have them cleaned regularly for long-lasting results.
