Gum Disease Treatment
Gum Disease affects over 80% of all US adults in some form or another, ranging from simple gum inflammation, called gingivitis, to serious problems that result in damage to the jawbone. Whatever degree of gum disease you may have, it is important to visit your dentist regularly and practice good oral hygiene at home.
Gingivitis produces gum disease symptoms including bad breath or red and swollen gums that are prone to bleeding easily. This is completely reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care. Untreated, this gum disease can progress on to become periodontitis. Once plaque spreads below the gum line, it produces toxins that irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response. The tissues and bone that support teeth start to break down. The gum separates from each tooth and forms an infected pocket between teeth and gums. The longer this condition is left untreated, the more bone is destroyed and eventually teeth become loose and have to be removed.
There are many different types of periodontitis including:
- Aggressive Periodontitis
- Chronic Periodontitis
- Periodontitis as a Manifestation of Systemic Diseases
- Necrotizing Periodontal Disease
With regular dental visits, your dentist can diagnose and reverse the process before the gum disease advances and contributes to further health problems.
