Periodontal Treatment

Non-surgical periodontal treatment is a pain-free, minimally invasive way to combat the germs that cause periodontal disease. Dr. Goldberg of Howell Dental Associates uses Arestin, an antibiotic, to perform this non-surgical periodontal treatment on all patients fighting periodontal disease, with optimal results. When appropriate, our approach to periodontal disease treatment easily and effectively kills the germs, essentially eliminating the need for any surgical periodontal treatment.

Gum DiseasePeriodontal disease is an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth. There are 2 stages of gum disease, called gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum tissue caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth called plaque. This causes red, swollen gums that typically bleed easily. Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis goes untreated and progresses to an advanced form of gum disease. Bacteria cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets where bacteria can proliferate and damage the bone that supports the teeth. The damage caused by periodontitis is usually irreversible. Teeth may become loose, fall out, or have to be extracted.

Gum disease can be treated surgically and non-surgically. There are multiple methods of non-surgical periodontal treatment. Dr. Goldberg and his staff implement the STM (Soft Tissue Management) program in their office. This program involves multiple visits in which the dental hygienist will perform deep cleanings, also known as scaling and root planing, to remove plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line. Gum DiseaseLocalized antibiotics such as Arestin may also be used in addition to deep cleanings, to eliminate the bacterial infection in the patient’s gums. Most importantly, the patient is given thorough lessons in proper home care, to ensure that the periodontal disease process is eliminated and doesn’t return.
