Tooth Decay
Tooth decay is one of the most common dental diseases and results from the loss of minerals within the tooth enamel due to the buildup of dental plaque. When plaque builds up, it produces an acid that erodes the tooth’s natural enamel. Tooth decay can destroy the tooth through the enamel and down to the pulp of the tooth.
Most often developing on the chewing surface of the back teeth, in between teeth, or near the gum line, tooth decay can also affect an unprotected root if it is exposed by gum recession. The excess plaque buildup can result from poor nutritional habits, insufficient oral hygiene, dry mouth problems, a lack of fluoride in water or toothpaste, or heredity. Tooth decay is not only treatable but also preventable by eliminating the amount of plaque and bacteria in the mouth and strengthening the teeth’s defenses.
Remember to eat a well balanced diet with strict attention to the amount of starchy and sugary foods. Fluoride toothpaste can help strengthen and protect your teeth and replace lost minerals. Prescription mouthwash and chewing sugarless gum can also help reduce plaque.
While brushing at least twice a day as well as regular flossing can remove some of the plaque and bacteria, plaque can quickly build up and reform. With regular dental checkups and professional teeth cleaning, your dentist can return your teeth to good health and monitor your teeth so no major problems can develop.
